A collector resin figure in 54 mm size from the brand Abteilung 502. The 54 mm size corresponds roughly to 1:32 scale; it is a format meant for display on its own in a cabinet, not an accessory to a vehicle model. The subject is a member of an infantry unit from 1861, that is from the beginning of the American Civil War, when individual units still took the field in their own, mutually different uniforms.
The resin figure is supplied on casting blocks and with fine seams along the parting plane of the mold. Cut the blocks off with a saw or a knife leaving a margin, sand the remainder away and never break a part off, because resin cracks away from the intended spot. Then wash the whole casting in lukewarm water with a drop of dish soap, because remains of mold release agent keep both primer and paint from adhering. Fit the parts dry, putty the gaps and sand them back. It is glued with super glue; cement for plastic does not bite into resin. Do the cutting and sanding with respiratory protection.
After a thin primer, work from the darkest tones toward highlights on the edges and the raised areas. At 54 mm size the smooth transitions are clearly visible, so it pays to build the color up in layers. Abteilung 502 is a brand associated above all with oil paints, and oil is not acrylic: it thins with mineral spirits or turpentine instead of water and it dries in a matter of days. The slow drying is an advantage when blending shades on the cloth of the coat and on skin, only it is necessary to work in stages. With acrylics the same result is built with many thin, heavily diluted layers. Leave the leather straps and the brass fittings until last, because their contrast against the cloth of the uniform makes the whole impression of the figure.
