A historical figure of a knight of about the year 1220, released by the Czech brand Black Dog. The 75 mm format is one of the collector's sizes: the figure is painted as a work in its own right, not as a small accessory to a vehicle, and the result is displayed on its own terms.
The turn of the twelfth and thirteenth centuries is the period in European warfare when the rider's body is protected by chain mail and covered by a long flowing surcoat. Devices on shields were only then settling into a fixed form, so figures from this time look less showy and far more workmanlike than later plate armor. For a painter that means a rewarding task: plenty of cloth, plenty of leather and only a little metal.
The seventy-millimeter format forgives less than tiny figures, but it allows things for which there is no room elsewhere. Transitions of light can be drawn out long and smoothly, the face will take worked-up eyes and a beard, and the texture of the weave can be suggested on the cloak. Chain mail comes out best over a dark base with a dry brush run only over the raised parts. Go easy on the gloss – a matte surface is more convincing on a medieval subject.
