A figure of a Persian warrior from the large-format historical range for which the Czech brand Black Dog is responsible. The 75 mm format is meant for the finished figure to be displayed on its own; it is not an accessory to a model of a machine or part of a larger kit. It is worked on as a piece in its own right from the first brush stroke to the last.
The Persian Empire is exceptionally rewarding for a figure painter precisely because of the colors. Where European subjects usually turn on metal, here it is the cloth that decides: layered garments, woven patterns, embroidery and ornamented belts. The headgear and the footwear differ sharply from anything builders of military vehicles know, and that is the main reason modelers pick this subject.
Patterns on cloth are painted onto a finished base, never the other way round. It works to lay down the base tone, add the shade and the highlight, and only then draw the ornament along the direction of the fold with the finest brush, so that the pattern follows the shape of the cloth. Leave the metal parts tarnished rather than mirror-bright; ancient bronze has a soft sheen. The skin benefits from warm tones and a light reddening around the joints and the ears. At the end, consider a muted wash over the whole surface; it will pull the separate areas together into one piece.
