Responsibility details are not available.
An injection-molded plastic kit of the American ocean-going submarine Gato as she was in 1944, in 1:144 scale. The set contains around 127 parts on seven sprues and a stand. Although the scale is small, this is a large model: the finished submarine measures around sixty-six centimeters. The state captured corresponds to the later appearance with a revised conning tower, deck and armament.
The Gato class submarines were the backbone of the American submarine force in the Pacific. They were built for long independent patrols, had great range and carried enough torpedoes to last a whole patrol far from base. Their appearance changed during the war, because the conning tower superstructure was cut down to make the boat harder to spot on the surface, while deck and anti-aircraft armament was added. It is exactly this later state that the set captures.
Glue the hull and fill the seam carefully, because every irregularity shows on a curved surface. Leave the conning tower and the deck railing for the end. Period American schemes worked with dark shades and a sharp boundary at the waterline, which you will handle best with masking tape. A submarine after a long patrol tended to be scuffed and marked by salt, so restrained weathering is in order.
The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
