This resin set from the Italian brand Royal Model replaces the wheels of the Cougar armored vehicle in its four-wheeled form. The tires are cast with a flattened footprint and a slightly bulged sidewall, so that the finished model stops looking as if it were hovering a millimeter above the base. The difference shows most on a flat asphalt surface, where the eye immediately compares the outline of a tire with its shadow.
The Cougar came about at the American firm Force Protection as an answer to improvised explosive devices in Iraq. The V-shaped hull deflects the blast wave to the sides, the crew sits high above the floor and the whole vehicle is built for surviving a hit rather than for agility. The shorter four-wheeled version served American units and the British army too, which adopted it under a name of its own.
Always stand the vehicle dry on a board first and turn all the wheels so that the flattened part lies exactly at the bottom. A mark on the inner side of the rim will make the position easier for you. Bring out the tread with a dry brush in a sandy shade and add pigment into the grooves according to the setting you place the scene in.
