About product

German 12.8 cm Selbstfahrlafette L/61 Sturer Emil (1:35, Trumpeter)

An injection-molded plastic kit of the German 12.8 cm Selbstfahrlafette L/61 self-propelled anti-tank gun, nicknamed Sturer Emil, in 1:35 scale by Trumpeter. The model captures the tall open superstructure with the long 12.8 cm gun, the complete breech and the inside of the fighting compartment including the ammunition stowage, and the elongated hull on its experimental chassis. The package holds plastic sprues and soft vinyl tracks; the exact numbers of parts and schemes differ between releases.

The real subject

Sturer Emil was a German experimental heavy tank destroyer of the Second World War. It was built on the lengthened chassis of the prototype VK 30.01 (H) tank from Henschel and carried the long 12.8 cm L/61 gun, one of the most powerful guns of its day. Only two vehicles were built, nicknamed Max and Moritz, and they were committed on the Eastern Front. The Moritz vehicle was captured at Stalingrad in 1943 and survives — today it is displayed in the tank museum at Kubinka. The nickname Sturer Emil means roughly Stubborn Emil.

Building and painting tips

The open superstructure reveals the inside, so assemble and paint the gun breech, the ammunition stowage and the fighting compartment before you close the whole thing up. Finish the suspension first and fit the tracks. Apply a primer and then the finish; depending on the period choose Panzergrau or the later Dunkelgelb. Lighten the inside, bring out the edges and the rivets with a drybrush, underline the panel lines with a wash and add dust and mud pigments to the lower areas and the suspension.

Who the model is for

  • For collectors of German vehicles of the Second World War and of rare prototypes
  • For modelers who enjoy open superstructures with a rich interior
  • For more advanced builders interested in heavy gun armament
  • As a striking piece for a display case and a basis for a diorama

The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
