About product

The SPW-70 wheeled armored personnel carrier in 1:35 scale (Trumpeter)

An injection-molded plastic kit of the SPW-70 wheeled armored personnel carrier, which is the designation used by the East German army (NVA) for the Soviet BTR-70 type. The set offers a large number of parts including clear parts, photo-etched parts and rubber elements; the model is built from individual parts and is meant to be glued and painted.

The real subject

The BTR-70, listed with the NVA as the SPW-70, is an eight-wheeled armored personnel carrier developed at the turn of the 1960s and 1970s. It serves to carry a squad, it is amphibious and it has 8x8 all-wheel drive. It was used by the armed forces of the Warsaw Pact states and by other armies. The vehicle is typified by its pair of engines and the side entries between the axles.

Building and painting tips

Assemble and fine-tune the running gear and the axles before closing the hull; the 8x8 drive calls for careful alignment. Fit the clear parts only once painting is done. For the finish use an airbrush with a primer, washes to bring out the detail and fine pigments on the lower areas and the tires.

Who the model is for

  • Those interested in Warsaw Pact equipment
  • Collectors of wheeled personnel carriers in 1:35
  • More advanced modelers used to photo-etched parts
  • Builders of Eastern Bloc dioramas

The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
