Morser Karl-Gerat 040/041 on a railway transport carrier in 1:35 scale from Trumpeter: one of the largest self-propelled guns in history. The manufacturer states a length of 840 mm for the assembled model and over 1200 parts.
Responsibility details are not available.
An extensive injection-molded plastic kit in 1:35 scale from Trumpeter. MIND THE SIZE: for the assembled whole the manufacturer states a length of 840 mm (width about 99 mm, height about 133 mm), that is 84 cm. Measure your display case before you order the model. According to the manufacturer the package holds over 1200 parts and offers the most important things: both barrels, the 600 mm caliber for the 040 variant and the 540 mm caliber for the 041 variant, shells included. It also holds two railway transport cars with track and track bed, so the finished model can be built either in the transport position slung between the cars, or on its own tracks in the firing position. In the box you will also find photo-etched parts (engine grilles, grab handles), metal axles and springs, folding side platforms, a barrel that moves in elevation, and decals.
The Karl-Gerat was one of the largest self-propelled guns ever built. It was created as a siege weapon against concrete fortifications: it fired concrete-piercing shells of enormous caliber over a short distance. The original 040 version had a caliber of 600 mm, while the later 041 rebuild was given a longer barrel of 540 mm caliber for greater range. Hence the two numbers in the name. The vehicle did move on its own tracks, but only for a few kilometers at walking pace: it was taken to the front by rail, slung between two special transport cars. It was used among other places at the siege of Sevastopol and in putting down the Warsaw Uprising. Only a handful were built, and each was given a name of its own.
This is a long-term project, not a weekend build. Divide the work into three subassemblies: the gun, the transport cars and the track bed. Each is built and painted separately and they are joined only at the end. Finish and paint the running gear and the suspension before you close up the hull. Decide in advance which barrel you want, 600 or 540 mm; the two cannot be used at once. Use thin solvent cement on the plastic and super glue on the photo-etched parts. The track bed deserves care: ballast, rust on the rails, greasy streaks on the ties. German gray or a later three-color camouflage suits the gun, with strong washes into the riveted seams and plenty of dust and mud on the tracks.
The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
