What replacement wheels are for

A wheel is a small part that everyone sees on a finished model. It carries the pattern of the tread, the markings of the sidewall and the shape of the rim, and it stands exactly at the eye level of a viewer looking at the model on a table. Wheels from a kit tend to be split into two halves with the seam running down the middle of the tread; sanding it so that the pattern stays whole is lengthy work. With replacement wheels that step falls away and the markings are crisper from the start.

Building and painting tips

Cut away surplus material and traces of manufacture with a sharp blade a short distance from the part and sand the seating surface level, otherwise the wheel will not sit square. Fit them dry first and stand the model on a flat board: a vehicle standing on three wheels with the fourth in the air gives the mistake away at once. If the wheels are modeled with a flat spot, turn the flattened part to the ground. Bond them with cyanoacrylate glue. Rubber is not black; it comes out better in a dark gray tone with a lighter dry brush on the edges of the pattern. Paint the rim in the shade of the vehicle and add dust and mud in the grooves with pigments.
