An injection-molded plastic kit of a heavy tractor combination in 1:35 scale from Trumpeter. The package holds both the tractor and the semi-trailer, so the finished result is an oversized model that stands up on its own as the centerpiece of a display case and as the base of a transport scene alike. It is a larger project with a great many wheels and a long frame, so count on a longer build.
The KZKT-7428 is a heavy wheeled tractor with all-wheel drive, designed to haul a semi-trailer carrying tracked machines on the road. Moving equipment on a semi-trailer spares the running gear of the machine being carried, cuts fuel consumption and shortens the time of a move over long distances. The KZKT-9101 semi-trailer has a low-set load deck, folding ramps and a multi-axle running gear of its own, which spreads the weight of the load over a larger area of the road surface. The cab of the tractor sits ahead of the engine compartment and the whole combination is among the largest vehicles of its kind for sheer size.
Divide the build into three parts: the tractor chassis, the cab and the semi-trailer. Glue the frame and the axles and let them cure on a flat board, so that all the wheels sit evenly. Fit the tires only after the rims have been sprayed; that saves laborious masking. Spray the whole model with a primer and only then cover it with the body shade using an airbrush. The load deck of the semi-trailer is a rewarding place for weathering: dust, scuffs from the ramps and smeared traces of mud look convincing, because the combination also runs on unpaved ground. Apply a darker wash in the recesses and dry pigments to the underside of the frame and the wheels. Fit the cab glazing and the mirrors at the very end.
