1:35 Soviet 2S7 Self-Propelled Gun, a Trumpeter kit

A plastic kit of the Soviet 2S7 self-propelled gun in 1:35 scale from Trumpeter. The subject is one of the heaviest artillery vehicles of its day, its 203 mm barrel set on an open mount at the rear of the hull.

The real subject

The 2S7 self-propelled gun was created in the Soviet Union as an artillery weapon at the highest level of command. The weapon is the 2A44 gun of 203 mm caliber, which stands exposed at the rear of the vehicle; the crew work it from outside and before firing the vehicle braces itself against the ground with a massive recoil spade. The tracked chassis uses elements developed within the tank program of the day, so despite its weight the vehicle copes with rough ground and with moves under its own power. The range quoted is around 37 km, and further still with rocket-assisted ammunition, which made the 2S7 one of the longest-ranged gun systems of all. The vehicle was later modernized and continues to serve in its reworked form.

Building and painting tips

With a vehicle of this size the most important thing is a straight chassis: assemble the rollers and the running gear on a flat board and keep checking that they all sit down. Hang the link-and-length tracks before the glue hardens, so that they have a natural sag. The open mount and the rear are the most visible parts, so leave yourself the most time for them. For color, Soviet protective green will do; bring it to life by lightening the large areas, with a dark wash and heavier weathering on the spade and the tracks, where the vehicle digs into the ground.
