An injection-molded plastic kit of the Chinese Type 63-1 tracked armored personnel carrier, YW-531A for export, in the early production form, in 1:35 scale from Bronco. This is a very unusual modeling subject: kit makers rarely do Chinese equipment of the 1960s.
The Type 63 was the first Chinese tracked armored personnel carrier of indigenous design, introduced in the 1960s. It had an angular armored hull with a low silhouette, a door at the rear for the dismounts and carried an infantry squad; its design was deliberately simple and suited to mass production. The vehicle became the basis for a whole family of conversions — mortar carriers, ambulances, signals and command vehicles — and China exported it widely, so it turned up in conflicts in Asia, in Africa and in the Middle East.
Finish and paint the inside of the hull and the running gear before you close the hull up; there is a door at the rear for the dismounts, so the interior is visible if you leave it open. Decide at the start whether you are building the vehicle with the door open or closed. Fit the track only once the running gear is painted. Chinese dark green comes alive with a dark wash in the panel lines and pronounced dust on the lower part of the hull; the angular surfaces take an edge highlight with a dry brush well.
The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
