Miniature microphones and goggle frames of photo-etched sheet will improve American tank crewmen and the crews of armored personnel carriers of the nineteen-sixties and seventies. Metal holds a thickness to scale that injected plastic cannot imitate, and the 1:35 scale allows it to be used to the full.
In Vietnam American crews wore a combined helmet with earphones and a boom microphone at the mouth, connected by cable to the intercom. Without it they could not talk to each other in the machine, because the engine and the armament drown the spoken word out. It is precisely this detail that makes a figure in an open hatch believable and sets it apart from an ordinary infantryman. Commanders, moreover, often sat on the edge of the hatch, so the head is visible close up.
It proves best to snip the parts off only at the moment you need them, or the small items are easily lost. Lead the bend against a metal ruler and make the joint with gel cyanoacrylate glue applied with the tip of a wire. You will complete the cable with thin copper wire. Apply the paint with an airbrush in misty layers, so that the fine engraving is not flooded. The olive shade of the equipment of that time looks better when it is lightened slightly.
The contents are a metal sheet with the parts; figures, coatings and joining compounds are not enclosed.
