Small areas are the worst for cutting by hand
The early I-16 is a small aircraft, and in 1:48 scale the model comes out small enough to hold in your palm. The glazing is tiny and rounded, and the facets between the frames are only a few millimeters across. It is precisely with parts like these that tape is hardest to cut, because the knife has nothing to run along and the edge easily wanders. Pre-shaped masks get around the problem; you only have to lay them down and press them on.
The Polikarpov I-16 was a Soviet single-seat fighter aircraft with a cantilever low-wing layout and retractable landing gear, that is, a very advanced machine for the time of its creation. The early versions had an open or sliding cockpit and lighter armament, and the aircraft saw combat in Spain, in China and in the first months of the war on the Eastern Front.
Lay the small masks with fine-tipped tweezers and press them down with a toothpick, especially in the corners. On rounded parts lay the mask down from the center and press the edges on only afterwards. Spray the paint thinned and in thin coats, as a heavy coat on a small area accentuates the step on the edge. Take the masks off right after the paint has dried.
The masking set is an accessory for a model, and the model itself and paints are not included in the package.
