A date palm in 1:48 scale from Royal Model combines a resin trunk with photo-etched leaves and turns a flat base into a piece of North Africa.
Responsibility details are not available.
A kit of a tree made up of a trunk cast in polyurethane resin and leaves in photo-etched metal. It is precisely the combination of the two materials that allows the foliage to be made as thin as this scale needs while still giving it a shape that holds.
A single palm tells a viewer the latitude faster than any caption. Date palms lined the coastal road in Libya, shaded the oases of southern Tunisia, grew in the ports of the Levant and around airfields in the Middle East. In the chosen scale the tree suits aviation scenes above all, because it is in that scale that most models of the machines that flew over North Africa are made, and it will serve equipment and figures of the same size just as well.
Before fitting, the photo-etched leaves are bent over the rounded handle of a tool, so that they lose their flat look; each one should look different, because in nature no two are the same. It is a good idea to degrease the metal and give it a primer, otherwise the shades will not hold. The trunk stands out after a dark glaze that is drawn into the grooves of the fibrous bark, and after a light pass with a dry brush.
The palm is intended for gluing and painting; you buy the glue and paints needed separately.
