An injection-molded plastic set of Messerschmitt Bf 109T carrier fighters in 1:700 scale. The package contains several examples of the same aircraft on shared sprues. This is not a stand-alone display model of an aircraft — in this scale the little aircraft serve to fill the decks and hangars of ship models, above all of aircraft carriers, or as an accessory for a small diorama scene. Instructions are included, and the aircraft are finished by painting.
The Bf 109T was the carrier adaptation of the Messerschmitt Bf 109 fighter, based on the E series and prepared for the planned German aircraft carrier Graf Zeppelin. The letter T referred to the designation for carrier use. The machine received an increased wing span with folding tips, a strengthened airframe, an arrestor hook and fittings for a catapult launch. Because the construction of the carrier was never completed, the aircraft never reached carrier service and were deployed from land bases, where their ability to take off and land on short, unpaved strips proved its worth. Only a small number were built, which makes the type an interesting rarity.
In 1:700 scale, work with tweezers, a sharp scalpel and a light-colored cutting mat. A proven approach is to spray the whole sprue in the base color, then pick out the undersurfaces in a lighter shade, and only then cut the aircraft off and clean them up. For gluing and fixing them to the deck, use a truly minimal amount of super glue. Suggest the camouflage pattern by the contrast between surfaces rather than by attempting a faithful pattern — in this scale what counts is the silhouette and the difference between the upper and lower surfaces. If you are placing the aircraft on a deck, think the spacing and the angles through in advance; a group looks natural when it is not lined up in a regular grid.
The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. The glue, the paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
