An extensive 1:72 decal sheet with twenty-one machines, from the volunteer Flying Tigers to their successor group, covering the period from 1941 to 1944.
Responsibility details are not available.
The American volunteer group began fighting over Burma and southern China before the United States even entered the war, and its machines with the painted shark mouth became one of the best-known images of the whole conflict. In the summer of 1942 the group was replaced by a regular fighter unit of the US Army, which took over both the tradition and the artwork. The sheet follows this whole line in twenty-one color schemes and is in effect a pictorial chronicle of one theater.
The older part is made up of Hawk 81A machines from Rangoon and Kunming in 1941 and 1942, including the aircraft of well-known pilots of the volunteer group. Then come the newer versions E, K, M and N from the autumn of 1942 to 1944, among them the machine of a Polish fighter ace who fought in China at the end of 1943. A curiosity is two schemes for the P-43A Lancer, the predecessor of the famous Thunderbolt, whose models appear only rarely. For each machine the unit, the place and the period of service are given.
That number of options means that the sheet will do for several models, and many of the entries share the same national markings. It is applied in the usual way onto a gloss surface, with water under the film and with a decal softener where the decal runs over a scribed seam or riveting. The shark mouths are printed to match the shape of the nose, so it pays to try the position dry. The kit has to be bought separately.
