About product

A photo-etched detail set for the Gloster E.28/39 in 1:72 scale by Clear Prop Models

A set of photo-etched metal intended to add to and refine the details on a model in 1:72 scale. It is not a kit but an accessory for modelers who want to go beyond the contents of the box. The advantage of photo-etched parts lies in the thickness of the material: it can credibly stand in for sheet metal components that would come out disproportionately thick in injected plastic. The particular contents of the fret and the number of parts are stated on the packaging of the set.

The real subject

The Gloster E.28/39 was a British research aircraft that was the first in Great Britain to fly with a jet engine. It came about to an Air Ministry specification as an experimental machine and was never armed. Its short fuselage with a nose intake, its straight wing and its nose landing gear pointed to the shape jet aircraft would carry for years to come. The trials with this type opened the way to the first British combat jets and are still regarded as one of the milestones of aviation.

How photo-etched parts are worked with

Separate the parts with a sharp scalpel on a hard mat, not by bending, otherwise the metal will deform at the tab. Make the bends over a straight edge; a photo-etch bending tool makes the work far easier, but two razor blades clamped in a clothespin will serve too. Degrease the metal before gluing and always try the part dry, because the original plastic detail may have to be sanded away for it to seat. It is bonded with a minimal amount of super glue, and on larger parts a gel variant is useful for the time it gives you to line things up. Start painting with a primer intended for metal, otherwise the surface will chip in handling. Small straps and levers are often left in a metal shade and only darkened with a wash.

Who the set is for

  • Modelers who want to refine details beyond the contents of a kit
  • Builders with experience of photo-etched metal and super glue
  • Competition modelers focused on credible thickness of sheet metal components
  • Collectors of pioneering British jet aircraft

This is a modeling accessory. The kit, paints and glue are not included in the package.

FAQ

No. These are photo-etched details. The kit of the aircraft has to be bought separately.

The contents of the fret are shown by the illustration and the description on the packaging of the set.

Working with photo-etched parts calls for a scalpel, tweezers and super glue. Without experience of tiny metal parts the build is more demanding.

Degrease the metal and use a primer intended for metal. Without it the surface is easily rubbed off in handling.
