A set of waterslide decals in 1:72 scale for the night fighter Havocs of the Royal Air Force. In subject it covers the Havoc NF Mk.I and Mk.II variants and the searchlight-equipped Mk.III Turbinlite. It is not a kit: the sheet serves to mark a plastic model you have already built and that you buy separately. The manufacturer is the Czech brand DK Decals.
The Douglas DB-7, known in British service as the Boston and the Havoc, was a twin-engine high-wing monoplane originally designed as a light bomber. Some of the machines delivered to Britain were converted into night fighters: they were given a solid nose with gun armament, an airborne radar and an all-black night finish. The Turbinlite is a chapter of its own. Instead of armament, an exceptionally powerful searchlight was fitted in the nose, powered by batteries carried in the bomb bay. An aircraft modified in this way was to find its target by radar, light it up, and an accompanying single-engine fighter would then finish the attack. The method did not prove itself in practice and the units equipped with it were disbanded in 1943.
Apply the decals over a smooth gloss coat. A matte surface leaves air bubbles under the film and what is called silvering results. Cut the sheet up into individual motifs, soak one for a few seconds in lukewarm water and slide the decal onto a spot that has been moistened beforehand. On all-black night finishes it pays to use a decal softener, so that the decal draws down onto the rivets and engraved lines. Once it has dried, spray over it with a matte varnish so that the glossy bed disappears.
The model is not included in the package. The decals are supplied on their own as an accessory for a kit; glue, paints and varnishes are not enclosed.
