Paving, tiling and an industrial floor can be made by hand: marking out, cutting, gluing and hoping that the joints come out parallel. A pressed sheet replaces that work with a single cut. The texture is pressed into the plastic across the whole surface, so the pattern keeps the spacing and the depth of the joint and does not disappear even after the edges are sanded.
This variant combines regular squares with a side of five millimeters with elements that have a rounded shape. The result is a surface resembling paving with offset bands, of the kind used on station platforms, in halls or at the edges of ramps. For a diorama it is a welcome change from a purely rectangular grid, because the eye recognizes at once that this is a real piece of construction and not a sample board.
The material is ABS 0.75 mm thick in a matte white finish. The sheet is cut with a snap-off knife by scoring and snapping, it can be filed and sanded, and it takes solvent cement just as ordinary polystyrene does. The white color makes it easier to judge coverage, because even thin coats show up on it.
Before painting it is enough to wash the surface in lukewarm soapy water and let it dry. The primer is applied in a thin coat so that the joints do not fill up, and the toning is then done with a filter and a wash that stays in the recesses. Anyone building a larger area will appreciate that the sheets can be laid side by side with the spacing continuing.
It is worth keeping the offcuts of the sheet for wall tiling or for filling inner bulkheads, where the offset pattern comes into its own in small areas.
