A set of six shades that make up the camouflage of the German Focke-Wulf fighter, including the mottled sides of the fuselage and the light undersurfaces. Tones for theater recognition stripes are included as well.
Responsibility details are not available.
The German radial-engined fighter went into action in 1941 and quickly became an opponent that Allied crews respected. Its finish went through a development from dark green surfaces through lighter gray-blue tones to the varied mottling on the sides of the fuselage, with which in the later years the silhouette was masked against the sky and against the landscape alike.
The set covers this change in six shades. Dark green and brown-violet form the pair for the upper surfaces, gray-violet belongs on the sides and on the mottling, light gray matches the undersides, and matte white serves for leading edges, numbers and additional markings. The sixth tone, mustard yellow, is aimed at the bands and cowlings by which machines on the Eastern Front were marked out according to theater.
Working with a palette like this has a tried order. First the light lower surface, after it the upper pair with a soft boundary, and only at the end the mottling on the sides, which is sprayed with thinned paint from a short distance. Low pressure and several passes do a better job than one heavy coat.
The palette will also serve on other German types of the same years, since aircraft finishes followed a single specification for all types of machine. Anyone building several machines will make most use of the light gray, which covers the largest areas.
The paints thin with water and take a brush and an airbrush alike. At the end a gloss varnish under the decals and a matte one over the finished surface pay off.
The difference between a successful and an unsuccessful build of this aircraft usually lies in one thing: the softness of the boundary between the upper tones. A sharp divide looks drawn on, whereas a lightly misted edge gives the impression of a real airbrush in field conditions.
