Six blue tones as a ready-made scale

Painting with a single blue usually ends in a flat result. For cloth, sheet metal or a painted surface to gain shape, a painter needs at least three levels of one tone: a base, a shadow and a highlight. This set offers such a scale ready-made, in six steps, so mixing falls away and with it the risk that a second batch of a shade will no longer match the first.

The make-up of the scale

From the darkest end it begins with Prussian blue, a deep tone with a hint of purple that serves well both as a shadow color and as a uniform base for Napoleonic and earlier periods. It is followed by a uniform blue, a pure blue and a bright blue as the middle band, a duck blue with a shift toward green for naval and technical surfaces, and a light blue for the final highlights and reflections. The range is acrylic and meant for a brush and an airbrush alike.

• A test card for quickly comparing which shade best suits a subject.

The manufacturer offers the shades from the set as individual bottles as well, so the one that runs out first can be topped up. The scale will also serve where blue is not the main color but a cool accent is needed, for instance on instrument glass, on markings or on small items of equipment.
