Six gray tones in one box, from a cold light one to a dark one. The make-up covers ship decks, aircraft undersides and the concrete surfaces of dioramas, and allows you to work with volume without mixing.

Anyone who has ever built a ship knows how treacherous a gray surface is. The difference between a cold and a warm tone decides whether a hull reads as steel or as a plastic toy. Photographs also shift the color often, so relying on a single shade is asking for a dead impression.
The set holds six tones that complement one another. The cold light one serves for upper decks and reflections of the sky, the stone gray has a touch of warmth and suits worn surfaces, the middle tone is the ordinary base. The ocean gray has the bluish undertone known from naval aviation, the neutral one stands exactly in the middle of the scale and the dark one closes the lower limit for shadows, seams and interiors.
That saves the modeler from mixing. Instead of searching for a ratio on the palette you reach for the neighboring tone and lay the coats over one another; the transitions can be misted with an airbrush into an unobtrusive join. On figures and small parts a dry brush will do the same service.
The use reaches further than ships. A gray scale is the basis for modern aircraft, for the concrete surfaces of airfields, for asphalt, for stone walls and for hardware in a winter landscape, where colors lose their saturation.
The bottles thin with water, go on by brush and by airbrush, and a short break between coats is enough. A matte varnish at the end evens out the sheen and keeps the impression of cold metal.
One practical piece of advice to close with: do not use the darkest tone as an overall color, but only in the narrow places under the superstructure and around protruding parts. The surface then holds together and the eye fills in the depth it sees in the shadows by itself.
The set forms the fifth part of a coherent line, so it can be supplemented by sets with a different color focus and the palette extended without needless duplication.
