The Soviet MiG-17 subsonic fighter of the early 1950s was built under license in Poland and served there in several versions for longer than in its country of origin. Machines for reconnaissance and ground attack received a brown-and-green camouflage above and light blue undersides, whereas older examples flew in bare metal with no finish. It is exactly that variety that makes the model a rewarding subject.
The make-up of the set responds to that. An earthy brown and a dark green form the upper pattern, two blue tones cover the undersides and the transitions on the sides, and a blue-gray serves for a fine boundary between them. The sixth bottle is a metallic steel and is aimed at the exhaust pipe and the areas heated by the gas stream, which on this type are hard to imitate with an ordinary silver.
The procedure has proved itself from the bottom up. First the lower blue, then the upper pair, keeping the boundary soft and not copying a drawing hard. The metal section of the tail is left right until the end, because metallic pigment is hard to overpaint and easily spreads over the rest of the model.
The range can also be used for hardware of other countries of the same bloc, because the green and blue tones were similar across those countries. It is also suitable for ground vehicles, where the earthy brown will cover scuffs and mud.
The bottles are thinned with water, they are worked with a brush and an airbrush alike, and thin coats preserve the fine texture of the panels.
Anyone who wants to go into detail is advised to start by studying period photographs. Shades in photographs shift with the light and the film, so the decision on how saturated a green to choose belongs to the builder, not to a chart. The set leaves plenty of room for that thanks to its two blues and the difference between them.
