A low hex 1.8 mm in size for detailing covers, flanges and mating surfaces. A coarser grade of the scale, which comes into its own in the larger scales of motorcycles and ground machinery.
Responsibility details are not available.
The flat variant of the hex differs from the ordinary one in how far it stands above the surface. A classic head forms a bold cube on the part with shadows on all six walls, whereas a low profile stays close to the sheet and draws a sharply outlined hexagon rather than a solid body. The designer chooses it on a real machine where nothing may be in the way: at the mating surfaces of covers, in places where another component slides past, or under a panel that closes up tight.
The 1.8 mm grade is among the coarser ones on this scale. It corresponds to a fastener that is visible on the subject at first glance: in 1:24 scale it works out at roughly 43 mm, in 1:12 at 22 mm of the real size. It comes into its own on large frames, on large flanges and anywhere the finer grades would be lost under a layer of paint.
The decision is simpler than it seems. A bolted joint can be taken apart, and that is why you will find it anywhere something is serviced, adjusted or replaced. A rivet is made permanently and has a smooth head, with no flats for a wrench. When you see a regular hexagon with sharp edges in a photograph of the subject, it is a bolt; a round or slightly domed lens with no edges is a rivet. Mixing the two up is noticeable on a finished model at once.
