A basic set of five pencils in light green, light blue, red, yellow and aluminum for small details.

Not every touch on a model calls for an airbrush or a jar of paint. For small areas of color, markings, warning features and a quick lift of a detail, solid pigment in a pencil is more convenient and, above all, reversible until it has been fixed.
The package contains light green, light blue, red, yellow and aluminum. The first two suit interior features and telling individual units of equipment apart, while red and yellow cover warning stripes, fire extinguishers, emergency exit handles and color markings on ammunition. The aluminum serves to pick out bare metal on edges, on hinges and in places where the surface is polished by rubbing. It is the metallic shade that is the most rewarding of the five, because very little of it goes a long way.
The pencils prove themselves wherever a brush would be too coarse and a mask too much work. The tip can be ground to a fine wedge and drawn along an edge like a ruling pen. Once applied, the color can be blended with a damp brush into a soft transition or left as a sharp mark. The base should be matte; on a gloss coat the pigment does not hold and smears. It is worth sealing finished work with a clear coat, otherwise even a light touch of a finger will wipe it away. For a modeler who does not yet have a full palette, these five are a sensible start. In normal use the lead wears down only slowly, so one package will see several kits through one after another. They can be stored loose in a drawer, with no risk of drying out.
