BLUE FOR DARK GREY from AMMO of Mig Jimenez is a filter on an enamel base in a 35 ml package. This is not a kit, but modeling chemistry for weathering. A filter is a very heavily thinned paint applied over a finished base coat: it does not cover it, but gently shifts its shade and unifies the whole area.

How does a filter differ from a wash? A filter works on the whole area — it tints it, brings it to life and blends differently mixed shades into a single whole. A wash, by contrast, highlights detail: it flows into recesses, engraved lines and seams and creates shadows. They are not mutually exclusive — they are commonly used one after the other.

This shade is a blue filter for dark gray areas. It is useful wherever dark gray looks flat and lifeless: German tank gray, gray ship hulls and superstructures, gray aircraft camouflage, and sci-fi subjects. The blue cast gives the gray depth and a cool tone.

Use

• Stir it thoroughly before use — the pigment settles in the bottle.
• Apply it with a soft brush over small areas at a time; do not flood the surface — the filter is meant to tint the area, not drown it.
• Let it flash off and judge the result; build the effect up in layers. One coat should be barely noticeable.
• Wipe off any excess with a brush dampened in a suitable thinner (for enamels, typically odorless thinner or mineral spirits).
• Apply it over a cured gloss varnish — the filter then spreads evenly and any excess wipes off without streaks or blotches.
• Once the weathering is finished, seal the surface with a matte or semi-matte varnish.
