The volume charts the British long-range airliner Bristol Britannia, that is the Type 175. It is neither a model nor a set of parts, but a publication devoted to the real machine. Charles Stafrace is given as the author in the name.
The Britannia was one of the high points of the turboprop era. Its four Proteus engines gave it the range to cross the ocean and at the same time running so quiet that the aircraft earned the nickname Whispering Giant. Testing, however, dragged on because of trouble with icing of the power units, and before the machine fully entered scheduled service jet types began to take over the market. It built a career all the same: it flew long-haul routes, later with transport aviation in forms for carrying troops and freight, and finally with charter operators who kept it in the air long afterwards. The same design line also gave rise to Canadian machines for maritime patrol and freight transport.
It suits admirers of transport aviation of the 1950s and 1960s and modelers who want to know the background of the subject as well as how to build it. It serves well when deciding which operator's finish to choose.
