Tiny bolts with a head provided with flats for a wrench, in a size of 0.4 mm. They belong among rivets, bolts and nuts, that is among the accessories for refining the surface of models of hardware.

Field of use

A bolt shaped straight onto a part of a kit tends to be the first thing that gives a finished model away. It is usually flat, its edges are soft and when the seams are sanded it disappears altogether. A separate bolt with flats for a wrench looks different: it has height, its edges hold a shadow and seen from the side it stands clearly above the surface. It will serve on engine covers, on hatches and frames, on armor plate, at hinges and anywhere it is meant to be visible that a part really can be taken apart. The 0.4 mm size is among the finest and will not enlarge the detail beyond a bearable degree even on models in the smaller scales.

How to use them

• Cut the original flat imitation of the bolt away with a sharp blade and sand the surface smooth.
• At the place of the hole it pays to make a dimple with a needle first, so that the drill does not wander.
• Drill the hole to the actual diameter of the shank rather than to the figure in the name; check the diameter on one piece beforehand.
• Take the parts with tweezers with fine jaws, otherwise they will bounce away around the workshop.
• Apply cyanoacrylate glue in a negligible amount on the tip of a needle rather than straight onto the part.
• The flat for a wrench should point the same way on neighboring bolts only where that makes sense; a slight turn looks natural instead.
• Once dry, a dark wash helps, as it brings out the shadow under the head.

Bolts in the stated size are supplied. Drills, tweezers, glue and paints are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise. Store the box closed, because small parts spill easily.
