The desert three-color combination of the German army: a sand brown, a sand beige tone and a light olive to RAL standards in 17 ml bottles.
Responsibility details are not available.
German equipment deployed outside Europe traded the familiar three-color European scheme for a desert variant in which light sandy tones predominate, complemented by an olive shade. The result is a markedly brighter whole on which the shadows under fenders, hatches and stowed tools stand out, and that is exactly why these machines show up well on the modeling bench.
The package contains three shades to RAL standards: sand brown 8031, sand beige 1039 and light olive 6040. In practice the first goes on as the field, the second forms the lighter areas and the third the green patches that break up the pattern. The boundaries between the fields are fairly sharp on this equipment, so masking tape or putty pays off rather than freehand spraying.
These are water-thinnable acrylics, each bottle holding 17 ml. Light desert tones have little covering power, so a light base underneath them helps; over a dark base so many coats would be needed that the engraving would be lost. Once the pattern is finished, the areas are unified with a light hint of dust concentrated around the running gear.
The three shades can be used on wheeled and tracked vehicles alike, and equally on containers, trailers and engineer equipment, which carried identical finishes on overseas deployments. The set belongs among the three-color packages of this line; the contents are complete for the scheme and nothing else is needed for it.
The shades can be mixed with one another to obtain slight variations between the individual machines of a column. Finishes were repaired in patches in service and a perfect match between vehicles was rather the exception.
