Thirteen hand-painted cacti in four types, height 1.27 cm to 6.35 cm, for desert scenes and the landscape of the American Southwest.
Responsibility details are not available.
The package holds thirteen plants divided into four shape types. Among them are the columnar saguaro with arms raised upward, a flat prickly pear with jointed pads, a low barrel cactus and a slender columnar species with no arms.
A desert scene gives itself away precisely by the variety of its silhouettes. If thirteen identical plants stood on an area, it would look like a plantation. Four different shapes allow little groups to be put together in which tall dominant features alternate with low undergrowth, and that is exactly the picture a viewer associates with a desert.
The smallest plant measures 1.27 cm and the largest 6.35 cm. The spread is wide enough that depth can be created in a scene out of a single package, with small clumps at the front and a strong dominant feature standing out at the back.
The plants are painted by hand, so they have varying shades of green and do not look like a mass-produced molding. The coloring may vary from one piece to another. They will serve in dioramas from Mexico, Arizona and New Mexico, in western scenes and beside models of vehicles deployed in dry regions.
A common mistake in a desert scene is an empty area strewn with fine sand. Real semi-desert is surprisingly varied against that: stones, dried-out tufts of grass, cracks in the soil, and precisely the plants that rise out of it as vertical accents. Cacti set out in it therefore do not fill the role of an ornament but fundamentally change how the terrain reads. They work best in loose clusters with larger gaps, not in an even scatter over the whole board.
