Cinders Coarse Ballast, a coarse scatter in the shade of cinders

A loose scenic material from the American maker Woodland Scenics supplied in a bag. It is a coarse grade of stone in the dark gray-black shade of burned coal and cinders, of the kind you know from older lines, sidings, depots and the areas around industrial plants. The material is fast in color and it is a raw material, not a finished part; you decide the shape and the extent of the area yourself while applying it.

Use

• Track ballast: pour the scatter between the ties and around them and level the profile of the ballast and its edges with a soft brush.
• Fixing: wet the area with water with a trace of dish soap, then soak it drop by drop with thinned PVA glue.
• Let it dry thoroughly, usually overnight, and only then fill out the weak spots with a second layer.
• It also suits embankments, dirt roads, the surfaces of coal stores or small rubble in a diorama.
• The shades and grades can be mixed with one another, and the resulting ballast then looks naturally uneven.

Who it is for

For builders of layouts and dioramas who want realistic ballast and unpaved surfaces without the laborious sorting of natural stone. A coarser grain stands out best in the larger scales, while in the smaller ones it serves rather as rubble, an embankment or the coarser surface of a dump.

This is not a toy, keep it out of the reach of small children. While pouring it over, work on a mat and avoid breathing in the fine dust.
