About product

CITY DARK DUST: an AMMO of Mig Jimenez pigment (35 ml)

A pigment, a very finely ground loose powder in the neutral dark gray shade of city dust. The container holds 35 ml. It is not a paint, it is not a liquid wash and it is certainly not a kit: it is a weathering material with which dust, dirt and deposits are applied to a finished model. The color tone is deliberately darker and sootier than desert or earth dusts: it matches the setting of cities, industrial sites, construction works and abandoned halls.

Use

  • It is applied dry, with a brush: the pigment is picked up and worked into the texture of the surface, into corners, seams and rivets.
  • It can be stirred into thinner or a pigment medium and applied as a slurry into recesses; once that has evaporated, the dust remains.
  • It is sealed with a pigment fixer: without sealing the pigment rubs off during handling. The fixer is applied gently so that it does not float the dust away.
  • It can be layered: several thin layers in differing shades look more realistic than one heavy one.
  • Typical targets: landing gear, fenders, running gear, the undersides of hulls, wheels and tracks, and the lower parts of buildings and dioramas.

When to reach for dark city dust

It suits modern military and civilian equipment in an urban setting, vehicles in fighting among buildings, construction equipment and dioramas with ruined houses, rubble and asphalt. Compared with light desert dusts it looks darker and dirtier, so it captures sooty city grime and dust from concrete and rubble mixed with exhaust fumes better.

Who it is for

For modelers of military equipment, builders of dioramas and figure painters who want to set a model in an urban or industrial setting. The pigment holds best on a matte surface, so apply it only after the final matte varnish.

Safety: this is a very fine powder, so do not inhale the dust. Work in a well-ventilated room and, for longer work or when dispersing it, use respiratory protection. Avoid spilling the powder and stirring it into the air. Keep out of the reach of children.

FAQ

It is a pigment, a loose, very finely ground powder. It is not a paint, a wash or a liquid effect, and certainly not a kit. It is applied dry with a brush, or stirred into thinner or a pigment medium.

Yes, if it is to last. Unsealed pigment rubs off at every touch. A pigment fixer is used, applied carefully so that it does not float the dust away and change its shade.

In shade and in mood. This pigment is a neutral dark gray, matching city and industrial grime, soot and dust from rubble and concrete. Light desert or earth dusts are warmer and lighter by contrast.

It holds best on a matte surface, so it is applied only after the final matte varnish. On a glossy surface the pigment does not take and is easily swept off.
