A cold gray shade belongs to granite, basalt and graywacke, that is the rocks most of what a train passes on its way through a valley is made of. It is precisely in cuttings and by retaining walls that coarsely broken stone appears most often, because nobody sorted or rounded it there. The same material also suits stone riprap around bridge piers and the conical heaps at the mouth of an adit.
The grain is the second coarsest of the four available, so the individual pieces are still distinguishable on a diorama but do not form boulders. Crushing leaves sharp facets on the stones which reflect light, and thanks to that the layer does not come across as a fused mass even after it has been soaked with glue.
When building a cutting it proves best to work from the top down. First the face is set in place, then a thin strip of stone is poured beneath it and finally the part reaching to the foot of the embankment is filled in. The layer at the bottom should be denser than at the top, because in nature the material shifts with gravity and accumulates at the foot. Gray stone moreover takes toning in both directions, it can be darkened with a sooty glaze and lightened with a white dry brush. Anyone building a mountain section will appreciate that the same stone can be used up in the face and down by the water without two different materials failing to match in color.
