A base with a finished surface solves what tends to be the most laborious part of a free-standing figure: the setting the figure stands in. Instead of layering putty, sand and gravel you get a finished relief of cracked road surface with pipework running through it. The cracks and the broken-out edges give the scene a story, while the pipework gives it a vertical element against which the figure's leg or its weapon can rest, so that the figure is not simply standing on a flat area.
The surface is designed as a subject for fantasy and post-apocalyptic settings, but it serves just as well under an urban figure. It is advisable to seat the figure before painting and to try out which position makes the stance look best in relation to the cracks and the pipework.
Cut off the excess material and the marks left by production with a sharp blade a little away from the part and level the underside so that the base does not rock. Wash and degrease the surface before painting. Cyanoacrylate glue will join the parts securely. The road surface looks convincing when a darker shade is laid into the cracks over a lighter gray base and the raised edges are lightened with a dry brush. The pipework will take rust and paint running downward. Finally it helps to tie the whole thing together with a faint dusty haze at the foot of the figure, so that it settles into the scene.
For figure painters who want to display a figure in a setting, and for builders of small scenes. Paints and glue are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
