An oil paint in a light, warm brown with a creamy cast. It is a shade that behaves on a model not like dirt but like light: it brightens the middle of large areas, softens sharp transitions and gives a surface the warmth that gray on its own never has. It serves well on sand camouflage, on wood, on tarpaulins and on gear.
Thinned paint laid over a larger area works as a filter, that is, a fine veil that unifies the shades beneath it. Small dots spread from top to bottom give dusty streaks. On wooden surfaces it suits as a base for a darker grain, and on figures as a lighter tone on leather gear. The rule is always to add oil in small amounts; a coat can be repeated, but an overdone one is hard to take back.
It is applied to a surface coated with varnish, preferably gloss or semi-gloss, so that the excess can be wiped away cleanly. Let a drop stand on cardboard so that the paper draws off some of the binder. It is thinned with mineral spirits or an odorless thinner and spread with a soft brush or a cotton bud. Drying takes considerably longer than with acrylics, so allow for that before further varnishing. Wipe the brush and the bud between strokes, otherwise you will only spread the paint you have picked up back over the surface.
For modelers who do not settle weathering with a single wash and who work with the warmth and coolness of shades. Thinner, brushes and varnish are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
