A modeling shaped piece for sanding with an arched profile. It is neither a kit nor a consumable abrasive in the ordinary sense, but a tool with a defined shape. Whereas a flat plate forces a plane onto a surface, a curved piece forces an arc onto it. On a model where a cowling, a wing root or the curved side of a hull come together, that is a fundamental difference. Hand sanding in such places almost always creates a flat area where a curve should be.
The shaped piece works best in short strokes along the arc, not across it. Across it, the profile bears on the surface with its edge alone and makes a furrow instead of a radius. Keep the pressure light and rather add to the number of strokes, because a shaped tool removes material faster than you expect and an arc once sanded away will not come back. Check the shape as you go by looking against the light from several angles, as a radius cannot be judged with a finger.
For modelers of aircraft and cars and everywhere the shape of the subject rests on flowing curves. Anyone who builds mostly angular vehicles and flat panels will get more out of a flat sanding board or a perpendicular shaped piece. The black finish is one of the color variants of this range, so do not ascribe different properties to it without confirmation from the manufacturer.
Fine dust arises while sanding, so work in a ventilated space and consider respiratory protection. Keep tools out of the reach of children.
