A deep green tone shifted toward blue matches vegetation that gets no direct light. Undergrowth beneath crowns, a north-facing hillside, the floor of a gully, a band of nettles behind a shed wall. In a diorama this shade is usually what gives the scene depth, because the eye reads dark places as further away and lower down.
A coarse fraction means larger grains and a broken surface. The material is therefore not suited to a carefully mown lawn, but serves superbly wherever vegetation is meant to look disorderly. The package takes 945 cm³, converted 57.7 cubic inches. The colorant is part of the material, so the shade does not disappear even after fixing solution is flooded over it.
Its strongest use is as a bottom layer. First the whole area is covered with dark turf, and only then are lighter tones sprinkled onto the raised spots. That produces the natural transition from shade to light which is hard to reach by repainting a finished area. The same principle works on bushes and on the slopes of an embankment.
The second role is spot work. A small pinch pressed in at the roots of a tree, into the corner between a wall and a sidewalk, or under a gutter suggests a damp spot that never dries out. Details of that kind are usually the first thing a viewer notices on a finished model.
The material is not tied to a scale. In larger scales it stands for continuous growth, in smaller ones it reads as whole bushes and low scrub. What is left over is collected back up after work and used on the next build. That is exactly why it pays to work over a large sheet of paper, from which unused grains pour back easily.
