A marker from the PLAYMARKER range in the dirty white shade, that is an off-white with a weathered cast. The tip applies the color directly, so there is no brush, no palette and no mixing. That is welcome on small areas and narrow features, where preparing paint takes longer than the painting itself, and on quick touches that do not justify opening a bottle.

Where the color is used

An off-white looks more natural on a model than a pure white, because scale and the age of the real subject usually take saturation out of white. It suits canvas and tarpaulins, bandages, ropes and cordage, bone and horn, faded lettering and markings, and clothing that should look worn. It also works well as a muted way of lightening edges where a sharp white would look too hard.

How to work with the marker

• Try the shade first on a piece of scrap plastic or somewhere that will not be visible on the finished model.
• Apply a thin layer and let it dry; on a dark base a light shade will call for more passes.
• Wipe the tip from time to time so that it does not pick up paint from the surface of the model.
• On a matte base the color holds more reliably than on a smooth gloss coat.
• For thinning, cleaning the tip and any clear coating, follow the manufacturer's instructions on the packaging.
• Store the marker tightly closed so that the tip does not dry out.
