A set of small turfs, that is finished pieces of grassy surface, supplied in a mixed version. It is not a loose material and not a kit: the individual turfs are simply placed and glued onto prepared terrain. The mix designation means that the pieces are not uniform in color but carry several shades and different grass heights together. That is exactly what is valuable in a model scene, because a real grassy surface never has one color.
The small turf format is intended so that an irregular area can be shaped with it. It suits the edges of tracks and rails, the corners between buildings and a fence, places by a wall or a curb where grass usually grows more thickly, and covering the transitions between a basic grassy area and bare terrain. Laying several pieces side by side creates a naturally mosaic-like surface with no repeating pattern.
Lay the growth only onto finished, painted and dusted terrain. Try the intended spot dry first, tear or cut the piece to an irregular shape as needed, since a sharp straight edge does not arise in nature. It is glued with PVA wood glue, and a drop of cyanoacrylate will serve for a firm hold on a hard substrate. Hide the transition between the growth and the surrounding soil with a sprinkled fine scatter, grit or pigment, so that the growth does not look like a glued-on carpet. You can match the coloring with a light overspray of heavily thinned paint from above or by dusting with pigment, always only very lightly and once dry. With a mixed set, first lay the pieces out and choose which shade belongs where: richer in shade and by water, lighter and drier on sunlit edges and raised spots.
This is a scenery accessory for building a diorama, not a model kit. The base, the glue and any further materials are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
