Edges, wear and speed

Dry brushing is the fastest route to making a model stop looking like a uniform casting. The paint catches on the sharp edges of plates, on the rims of hatches, on the corners of crates, on iron-bound corners and on coarse texture. Those are exactly the places where the surface wears on a real object too, so a brought-out edge also reads as a trace of wear. An orange tone is especially rewarding in this role on a dark base, where it works as a warm highlight or as a hint of a corroded and scuffed surface. Use

• Always wipe the excess paint off on a towel until a stroke no longer leaves a continuous mark.
• Stir the bottle before work, so that the shade is the same on the first figure and on the last.
