About product

AMMO DRYBRUSH Light Blue - an acrylic paint for the dry brush

An opaque water-based acrylic in a thick consistency, prepared so that it can be used for drybrushing straight away. The light blue shade has a clear role in this technique: it is the highest tonal value, applied at the very end and only to the most prominent edges. It thins and cleans with water, but for the work it is deliberately applied unthinned.

How to work with it

  • Take a stiff, rather worn brush - a fine pointed one will be ruined by this technique and will achieve nothing anyway.
  • Pick up a minimum of paint and wipe almost all of it off onto paper; only a hint should reach the surface.
  • Work from dark to light: the mid tone first, and only at the end this light one on the highest points.
  • Draw short strokes across the edge, not along it - otherwise you get a smear instead of a highlight.
  • Build it up in layers. An overlit spot is far harder to correct than one that is not highlighted enough.

Where the light blue shade comes into its own

It comes into its own anywhere the base coat has a blue tone - the fuselages and wings of naval aircraft, the blue areas of ship models, blue parts of civilian vehicles or machinery. Light blue also suits the suggestion of a weathered coat on upper surfaces that got the most sun. On figures it is used on the folds of blue cloth, where a pure white highlight would look chalky.

Who it is for

For modelers who work with layered highlighting and want a light blue tone at hand without mixing. Suitable for vehicles, aircraft and figures alike.

Close the jar carefully so that the paint does not thicken. Keep out of reach of children and clean the brush immediately after the work.

FAQ

From dark to light. Light blue is the top tone, so it comes last and only on the highest points of the relief.

It can be thinned, but do not do it for drybrushing. The thickness is exactly what keeps the paint on the edge instead of running into the recesses.

It is not intended for that. It is a brush paint; in a spray gun it would have to be thinned considerably and the effect of the technique would be lost.

Go over the spot again with the base shade of the model and repeat the highlight more weakly. That is why it is recommended to build the effect up in thin layers.
