A bush is useful twice over in a diorama. First it fills an area that would otherwise stay empty, and second it covers what a viewer is not meant to see, that is the edge of the base, the joint of two layers of terrain or the footing of a post. In nature it grows where there is no mowing and no plowing: on field boundaries, along fences and ditches, at the edges of tracks, in ruins and by abandoned homesteads. A bush also gives a scene scale, because a viewer estimates its size of their own accord, and it serves as a screen behind which a vehicle partly disappears.

Build a group of bushes unequal in height and irregular, because growth of the same height in a row looks like a hedge on a housing estate. Sink the bottom into the terrain and add a little leaf litter and dry grass around it, so that the bush does not stand on the surface as if stuck on. Put the tones between the individual pieces slightly out of tune with one another and leave the lower parts darker, as that is where light does not reach in nature. Choose the glue according to the material of the parts and according to the manufacturer's instructions. Dust and an earthy tone applied lightly to the lower part of the growth will tie the scene to the terrain at once.
