About product

Hobby Boss Messerschmitt Bf 109E (September 1940) 1:18

An injection-molded plastic kit of the German Messerschmitt Bf 109E fighter, nicknamed the Emil, in its September 1940 condition, in the exceptionally large 1:18 scale from Hobby Boss. The 1:18 scale means a giant and richly detailed model, markedly larger than ordinary aircraft kits, with a well-worked engine, armament and cockpit interior.

The real subject

The Messerschmitt Bf 109E was the main German fighter in the opening years of the Second World War and the key opponent of the British fighters in the Battle of Britain in the autumn of 1940. It was powered by the inverted V12 Daimler-Benz DB 601 engine with direct fuel injection; the armament consisted of machine guns and cannon. The Emil excelled in the climb and in the dive and became one of the symbols of the air war over the Channel.

Building and painting tips

The large scale tempts you to get the most out of the detail: assemble and paint the engine, the cockpit and the armament before you close the fuselage, because on the finished model they can be exposed and displayed. Mask the large canopy glazing so that it stays clear. Glue the parts with thin cement for plastic and, on the large surfaces, make sure the joints are firm and add stiffening where needed. A primer, an airbrush, fine washes into the panel lines and a realistic patina on the engine and the exhausts are all worth considering.

Who the model is for

  • collectors of German aircraft of the Second World War
  • modelers who want a large-format, richly detailed model for a display case
  • more experienced builders with a taste for exposed engines and interiors
  • fans of the Battle of Britain and of the Bf 109

The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.

FAQ

The 1:18 scale is exceptionally large: the model is markedly bigger than ordinary aircraft kits and offers rich detail on the engine, the armament and the cockpit.

The E version, nicknamed the Emil, in its September 1940 condition, that is from the period of the Battle of Britain.

Because of the large scale and the amount of detail it is better suited to more experienced modelers, but it rewards them with a striking result for a display case.
