An injection-molded plastic kit in the large 1:32 scale representing the American fighter Bell P-39Q Airacobra, one of the most widely produced versions of this unusual aircraft. The model is supplied as an unassembled and unpainted kit; check the exact contents of the package and the range of decals against the manufacturer's current specification.
The Airacobra was exceptional among the fighters of its time in the layout of its power plant: the liquid-cooled Allison V-1710 V12 engine sat in the middle of the fuselage, behind the pilot's back, and drove the propeller through a long shaft running under the cockpit. This solution freed the nose for heavy armament, as a 37 mm cannon passed through the hollow propeller shaft. The aircraft had nose landing gear, untypical for its day, and the cockpit was entered through side doors in the manner of a car. The P-39Q version was among the most numerous; some machines carried underwing gondolas with machine guns. Airacobras made their mark above all with the Soviet Air Force, which received a large share of the deliveries, but they also served with other Allied operators.
The large 1:32 scale offers room for detail, so it pays to work up the cockpit interior and the engine bay carefully before closing the fuselage up. Glue the joints with a thin modeling cement, apply a primer before painting and spray the surfaces with an airbrush. Mask the extensive cockpit glazing. The panel lines and riveting come into their own once a dark wash is applied.
