An injection-molded plastic kit in 1:32 scale depicting the Soviet Polikarpov I-16 fighter, nicknamed Rata or Ishak. The large 1:32 scale means a bigger model with room for the details of the stubby fuselage, the radial engine and the cockpit. The package contains clear parts for the canopy and decals for several marking options.
The Polikarpov I-16 was one of the most significant fighters of the 1930s and one of the first monoplanes in the world with retractable landing gear and an enclosed cockpit to go into series production. It was powered by a radial engine and the machine was marked by a short, stubby fuselage with a large frontal area, which made it agile but also demanding to fly. The I-16 made its name in the fighting in Spain, where it was given the nickname Rata (rat), and it was also used in the early stages of the war on the Eastern Front. Soviet pilots knew it by the nickname Ishak (donkey).
Glue the parts with liquid modeling cement for plastic and sand the joints of the short fuselage carefully. In the large scale the detail of the radial engine and the cockpit shows to advantage — it is worth working them up before you close the fuselage. Mask the glazing with templates. Apply a primer before painting; lay the green or silver Soviet camouflage on with an airbrush, put the decals onto a gloss clear coat and seal them with a further coat. Panel shading and light weathering bring the model alive. Pay extra attention to the geometry of the landing gear struts and cables, which are structurally very distinctive on the I-16.
The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
