The flagship large-scale kit of the British fighter Supermarine Spitfire Mk.XVIe in 1:32 scale from Tamiya. The model faithfully reproduces the typical features of the late version: the license-built Packard Merlin 266 engine, the E-type wing with a pair of 20 mm cannon and a pair of 12.7 mm machine guns, the teardrop canopy and the modified landing gear legs. The engine cowlings are only 0.4 mm thick and are held by small magnets, so they can be taken off even after the build is finished to show the engine. The ailerons, the rudder and the elevators are movable, the flaps can be built lowered or raised and the landing gear extended or retracted. In the package you will find photo-etched parts (the cockpit armor plate, the seat belts, the wheel covers, the instrument panel), masks for the glazing, a drop tank of 30 gallons, two 250 lb bombs, two pilot figures (seated and standing), a stand for display in flight and three marking options. The finished model is 302 mm long with a span of 311 mm.
The Spitfire Mk.XVI was one of the last production versions of the legendary British fighter. From the otherwise almost identical Mk.IX it differed above all in the powerplant: it carried a Merlin engine built under license in the United States by Packard, designated the Merlin 266. The letter e in the designation meant E-type wing armament, two 20 mm cannon and two heavy 12.7 mm machine guns in place of the older arrangement of eight light machine guns. A number of machines had a cut-down rear fuselage and a teardrop canopy, which markedly improved the pilot's view to the rear. The Mk.XVI served at the end of the Second World War and after it, mainly as a fighter-bomber over Europe and later with training units.
Finish and paint the cockpit before you close the fuselage, because once it is glued you cannot get at it. Shape the photo-etched belts with tweezers and glue them with super glue, and the plastic parts with thin cement for plastic. Apply a primer before painting, otherwise the paint holds poorly on smooth plastic, and mask the glazing with the masks supplied. Always apply the decals over a gloss clear coat so that no white silvering film appears; once dry, spray a flat or satin varnish over them. Leave the magnetic engine cowlings unglued and show the Merlin inside.
The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
