An injection-molded plastic kit of the British Rolls-Royce Armoured Car in 1:35 scale from Meng. The kit has 190 parts in total, and both the 1914 pattern and the later 1920 pattern can be built from one box, because it holds two types of rims and tires. Photo-etched parts, clear parts for the headlights, rubber tires and decals are included. The machine gun mount in the turret rotates. The finished model measures roughly 147 mm long.
The Rolls-Royce Armoured Car is one of the first armored cars in history. It was created in the autumn of 1914 by welding armor and a rotating turret with a water-cooled .303 Vickers machine gun onto the chassis of the luxury Rolls-Royce Silver Ghost passenger car. The combination of a solid, exceptionally reliable chassis and simple armor proved so successful that the car served from the First World War until the start of the 1940s, across two generations of battlefields. The 1920 pattern is a later modernization with revised armor and chassis.
The most famous chapter of the car is the desert: T. E. Lawrence (Lawrence of Arabia) used a squadron of nine armored Rolls-Royces on operations against Ottoman forces and became known for saying that a Rolls in the desert is above rubies. The cars then appeared again in the Middle East and in North Africa in the Second World War, where only more modern types finally withdrew them from the front line.
Decide right at the start whether you are building the 1914 or the 1920 pattern, because the wheels and the details of the body differ. Fit the rubber tires only after the rims are painted; rubber cannot be glued with ordinary cement for plastic, so use cyanoacrylate if you need to fix it. Glue the photo-etched parts with cyanoacrylate and the plastic with thin cement. British green and desert sand both come alive if you lighten the upper surfaces with an airbrush; this type of vehicle suits strong weathering, with dust and sand pigments in the wheel wells and on the fenders, a fine wash in the rivets and armor seams, and wear on the edges with a dry brush or a pencil.
The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
