The Panther, Sd.Kfz.171 in service designation, was a German medium tank built around a 75 mm gun with an unusually long barrel and a high muzzle velocity. Its sloped front armor gave it good protection from the front, but the sides remained vulnerable. The Ausf.G version was the last one in series production and can be told by its reworked hull sides, which took on a single unbroken shape with no cutout above the driver's station; a periscope replaced the driver's vision slot. Late production machines differ from earlier ones in a whole range of details, from the shape of the gun mantlet to the design of the exhausts and the wheels.
The FG1250 was an active infrared system: it consisted of a sight and a searchlight on the commander's cupola and worked by illuminating the target itself with infrared light that the human eye cannot see. Hence the word active. The advantage was the ability to fight in the dark; the drawbacks were limited range, dependence on an illuminating vehicle at longer distances, and the fact that the device gave itself away by its own emission to anyone with a similar receiver. Machines equipped in this way only saw action in the last months of the war, and in small numbers.
This is a kit to be assembled and painted. In 1:35 scale the finished model comes out about twenty-five centimeters long with the gun forward. The scope of the parts, the type of tracks and the range of marking options are given in the manufacturer's instructions.
Dry-fit the running gear and paint the lower hull before you close it in with the wheels and the tracks. Glue the small parts of the night vision device last of all, as they break off easily. Wash and degrease the surface before painting. Paints, thinner, glue and tools are not part of the delivery, unless stated otherwise.
