An injection-molded plastic kit of the German Rheintochter R-2 antiaircraft guided missile with its launcher in 1:35 scale from the manufacturer Bronco. The model captures the missile itself and its launch ramp and represents an unusual subject from the field of early rocket weapons.
The Rheintochter was a German antiaircraft guided missile developed during the Second World War by the firm Rheinmetall-Borsig. Its name refers to the Rhine daughters from Richard Wagner's operatic tetralogy. It was an experimental weapon meant to destroy bomber formations at high altitude; the R-2 version was among the variants worked on in this program, which never reached series service. The missile was launched from an inclined ramp and was to hit an aircraft at an altitude that conventional antiaircraft artillery could no longer reach; the program was held back, however, by technical trouble and by the end of the war.
The missile and the ramp both hold fine parts, so shape any photo-etched items carefully and glue them with cyanoacrylate glue. The body of the missile calls for careful sanding of the joints, so that the smooth aerodynamic shape comes out. For a faithful look choose period German shades, shade the edges lightly and add restrained washes into the engraved lines; exaggerated weathering does not look true on experimental equipment.
The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
